Heparin Contamination Crisis

From late 2007 into early 2008, contaminated supplies of the anticoagulant heparin resulted in a string of serious illnesses and deaths. In total, over 700 people reported severe reactions, and 81 died. In collaboration with the FDA, the academic community and commercial groups, the Sasisekharan Lab identified the source of the contamination as oversulfated chondroitin sulfate (OCSC).
